$500K payout for East Tennessee man who won fishing tourney

Four days of tournament bass fishing in Arkansas was exhausting. It required skill, preparation, patience and, as always, a little luck.

“Sunday after we checked the boat in at the lake,’’ Knight said, “you’ve got a 40-minute drive to Hot Springs for the weigh-in.

“Everything I could do was over. I didn’t think I had done enough to get it done. I couldn’t hardly hold my hands on the steering wheel.’’

Knight had in fact done enough. He had won the biggest prize in bass fishing, the Forrest Wood Cup, and its life-changing $500,000 payday.

Fifty of the best bass fisherman qualified to gather at Lake Ouachita last week for the big event on the Fishing League Worldwide calendar.

“You have the FLW, that’s like the NASCAR of bass fishing,’’ Knight said Wednesday. “It’s the upper tier. The Forrest Wood Cup is basically the Super Bowl of our sport.’’
